Now I am very sad we did not take the time to go to it, but I will just have to put it on the list for next year.
Manana is the Fiesta of our Lady of Balvanera.
This fiesta takes place in the near by, once thriving, mining town of La Aduana. But, it begins here and in many other nearby towns with mass at the local cathedral and then a walk from town to La Aduana, which from Alamos, is about three hours.
Legend tells us that Mayo Indians saw the vision of a woman on top of a cactus in La Aduana. A pile of rocks was built to lead the Indians to the woman, who vanished before they could reach her. A rich vein of silver then appeared at the site of the rocks and a church, Nuestra de la Balvanera, was built there to commemorate the site.
Outside the church a healthy cactus grows in the church wall and when the light is right, the shadow cast upon the ground looks like a woman praying.
I have been invited by a Mexican family to walk to La Aduana tomorrow. So, around 3:45am I will put on my hat and gloves and fleece pullover and go to our designated meeting spot and walk to La Aduana.

I am a decent walker. Each week I put on a lot of miles, so I am not too worried about that. But, jeez, it is cold here now in the early hours, fifty-two at 7:30am today was Senor's morning weather report.
So, I am on a mission this afternoon to find and unpack my gloves, my hat and that fleece pullover.
The good news is we don't have to walk back. A friend of the family will pick us up and bring us back in a truck.
The bad news is we no longer have a working alarm clock, so the vision I have is of me waking through out the night to check the time because I would be terribly embarrassed to be late or to not make it at all. In other words, a sleepless night is awaiting me, I am certain.
I will be tired tomorrow, but I plan to get some pictures for you to see.

How wonderful to be invited to join in such a lovely traditional celebration. i do hope you get a little sleep before such an early start.
you know, now that I am loading my pack in preparation for tomorrow, I am not sure I will take my camera. It's going to be dark....so just envision thousands of people walking under the starlit sky from Alamos to La Aduana. LL

If you have a cell phone you can use that as an alarm....too late for this time probably but, in the future.
